Planning
Planning is the process of setting intentions, developing strategies, and outlining tasks to accomplish the goals. Planning involves envisioning the results the individual wants to achieve, and determining the steps necessary in order to arrive at the intended success.
Planning is very important skill for a college student, I would know. Knowing how to plan efficiently helped me a lot throughout my first year of college such as my college schedule, my weekly to-do list, errands, and etc. There are some people at Creighton that helped me with my planning, especially my RSP advisor. Dr. Ishii-Jordan helped me from the first day I arrived at Creighton. She gave me advices and information that I needed to know to stay on task by helping me plan schedules and goals such as figuring out a major for myself, trying to graduate in four years, and getting into medical school.
An event that I planned during my time in the Freshmen Leadership Program was the Thanksgiving Dinner. I wanted to help out with the dinner as much as I could. I’m really into making crafts and being creative and resourceful. I decided to apply for the role of head committee of decorations. I was so happy that I was announced head committee of decorations and I got to work along with my roommate, Alyssa, who was chosen to be head committee of set up. At first, I thought it wouldn’t be too hard to do the decorations for the dinner because the materials would be provided for us and we can come up with ways to use them. However, I was wrong. Although our committee had an idea of what we wanted to do, but getting the materials was the big problem. We were on a budget so we didn’t have that much money to spend so we had to call places and ask for donations. There were a few places that donated some pumpkins and flowers, which were so nice of them to do. Along with the pumpkins and flowers, we also had colored papers to use. Therefore, we made papered cornucopias filled them with flowers and pumpkins as our centerpiece. As well, we incorporated this year Freshmen Leadership Program’s theme “Coloring outside of the line” by having crayons on each table for everyone to draw. Overall, the Thanksgiving Dinner was a complete success! The centerpiece and the donation boxes looked amazing and the food was delicious.
